Sustainable Wood Guide: How and Why to Use Wood that’s Best for the Planet

Even in today’s modern world, more wood is produced for things like furniture and construction than at any previous time in history. Due to it being naturally occurring and renewable, it is still often seen as a better option than alternatives like steel or plastics.

Unfortunately, our increased demand for wood is having a destructive impact on the world’s habitats. Forests that give us everything from oxygen to medicines, and provide habitat for millions of animals whilst combatting climate change. In fact, one in three tree species harvested for timber are currently at risk of extinction.

It is more important than ever therefore, that we do what we can to reduce our impact. This Sustainable Wood Guide will help you choose wood from healthy sources, avoid at-risk species and find alternatives to using new timber.

Best Sustainable Wood Choices

Durable & Responsibly Sourced Hardwoods

  • Oak (FSC-certified) – Oak is long-lasting and widely available in many parts of the world, and makes beautiful furniture, like this wood double ottoman bed
  • Maple (FSC-certified) – Great for furniture and flooring, another durable and therefore sustainable, handsome option
  • Ash (FSC-certified) – Strong and flexible, if certified ash is a great option for long-lasting furniture

Fast Growing & Renewable

  • Bamboo – whilst technically a grass, this fast-growing but strong material is rapidly renewable and therefore a sustainable and stylish option for furniture
  • Pine – As long as it is FSC-certified, pine grows quickly and therefore if sustainably managed has little impact on the environment

How to Identify Sustainable Wood

Look for these certifications to ensure wood is responsibly sourced:

  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) – The FSC is the gold standard for sustainable forestry, and a sure sign that your wood was harvested with the least possible impact on the environment
  • PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) – Another reliable source that ensures sustainable forest management in the production of timber for commercial use

Reclaimed & Recycled Wood

Salvaged wood from old buildings, barns, or furniture reduces demand for new lumber and therefore constitutes the most sustainable option for buying wood.

By choosing FSC-certified, reclaimed, or fast-growing wood, you can reduce deforestation and support a healthier planet.
