How to Safely Pack up your Home Before Moving House

Packing is one of the most stressful aspects of moving houses. To ensure that you don’t lose or damage your items during the move, you have to be strategic about how you pack. Here are a few tips on how to safely pack up your home before moving house.

Get packing supplies

To ensure that your belongings arrive at your new home without a scratch, you’ll need to purchase the right packing and moving supplies. These include:

  • Boxes: You’ll need to purchase sturdy cardboard boxes or rent plastic moving boxes to store all your items in. If you decide to use cardboard boxes, you’ll need small, medium, large, heavy-duty, wardrobe, and telescopic boxes.Packing tape: Get quality packing tape and plenty of it. You’ll need it for building and sealing boxes, so splurge on durable tape to ensure that your items survive the move.Packing tape and bubble cushioning: These are necessary for wrapping up fragile items. Anything made of glass, ceramic, or porcelain needs padding to ensure that it doesn’t break during the move.
  • Plastic bags: Instead of using boxes to pack clothes, linens, pillows, etc., use trash bags instead. Get the heavy-duty or force-flex trash bags to avoid double-bagging.
  • Labels and permanent markers: Ensure that you label the contents of every box as you pack. Also, label fragile items so that the movers can handle them with care.

Declutter

Moving forces you to make a clean sweep of your house, getting rid of anything that you no longer need. As you pack, categorise your belongings into what you want to keep, donate, and throw out. In addition to that, set aside seasonal items and other memorabilia that you wish to keep. I myself recently moved to Manchester and decided to find self-storage for these items in Safestore Manchester.

Make an inventory of your belongings

Before you move, it is critical that you know exactly what is going to move with you. After decluttering, make a detailed inventory of the items you plan to take. Use your phone to take photos and videos to make a record of your belongings room by room. This will help you keep track of your valuables, especially if you’ll be hiring a moving company.

Pack one room at a time

Packing your belongings by room helps you stay organised and makes it easier for movers to know which box goes where. Begin with the rooms you use less often, such as the loft or basement. Before handling everything else, start packing items that you’re currently not using, such as seasonal decorations, gardening tools, toys, coats, etc.

The key to packing is staying organised and using the right packing supplies. Starting early will also ensure that you have enough time to go through your items and pack them well.
